My time at MacDowell taught me a lot about myself and how I work and live. Every few days I'll post a simple lesson I learned in the woods outside Peterborough, NH.
Nature can be an endless reservoir for the imagination if we take the time to look and listen. Let nature in and she will reward you.
One rainy afternoon, I was
hunkered down in my studio getting a lot of writing done when suddenly the sky
opened up, grey clouds parting to reveal a bright winter sun. Without thinking
I rushed to put on my boots and ran outside, seizing an opportunity for a walk
in the sun—an opportunity I could neither predict nor control.
It’s difficult to pinpoint precisely the impact this has on the work.
One thing’s for sure: letting nature guide us reminds us of something larger and more powerful than we are and, as a result, expands the mind beyond itself.
