A press release arrived recently from Massachusetts' Green Theatre Collective, announcing their eco-friendly production of Shakespeare's As You Like It in... drumroll... a public park!
I know what you're thinking. And I thought the same thing. Didn't Joe Papp do this in the 1950s? What's the big deal? But this group takes their moniker a little bit further by eschewing costly (and environmentally destructive) sets and lights by performing al fresco by daylight. Check out their website if you plan to be in the vicinity of Newburyport, MA this summer. Here's some of the juiciest copy from their Mission Statement:
By performing in outdoor spaces used by the community, we not only seek to entertain our audiences, but also help reacquaint them with their environment, and acknowledge the need to preserve and honor it ... Using minimal to no set, costumes or props, our productions will be performed by a company of green-minded actors. As we will not be performing on traditional stages each show is then able to adapt to a myriad of [sic] environments.
