Working publicly: good idea, bad idea?

I just had this thought: while developing a new idea for a script or a story...what if I were to put my notes up on the internet?  Character sketches, plot ideas, etc, etc.  It feels a little scary and dangerous, from a creative point of view.  (What if my ideas look stupid, what if someone steals an idea... that sort of thing.)

I'm interested because... well, I rarely see things in process.  We might hear how a draft of a play or a screenplay took a lot of work, but, we only see the finished product.  How did Arcadia, for example, get from the begining to the end?  What was that process of writing look like?

So, it's a bit of an experiment.  But, I'm curious, what do you all think about that idea?  Working VERY publicly?
