Love this little bit from Ken Davenport's Day By Day blog about producing the upcoming Godspell revival.
So, we bought a $100 flyer stand, and every day, an intern, staff member, or me, brings it over and parks it in front of our doors. Pretty simple. Very effective.
Today, I decided to take a break from my paperwork and walk over to the theater(s) after Wicked let out to watch and see how many people looked at our marquee, how many people read our posters, and how many people grabbed a flyer. I’ve always believed that observing how your audience interacts with your advertising is an important part of what a Producer does.
I even got a chance to talk to Mom & Daughter Maureen and Nora (that’s Nora snagging a flyer in the pic), who were in town from New Haven, CT to catch Wicked. Mom Maureen remembered seeing the show “years ago” and loving it, while the show would be a new one for Maureen.
We had a fun chat. Their last question to me was, “When does Godspell start performances?” That was an easy one for me to answer . . . in 95 days.
I think it illustrates what separates the really great producers from the poseurs. The real producer is curious about everything. And wants to understand it on the smallest level. Read more about this production at Ken Davenport's Day by Day blog.
