Driving up to Vermont, I hear an NPR story about the city of Hartford, CT. The city has engaged a marketing and public relations firm to help it improve its image. Branding is the new obsession for a society that has gradually grown more and more enamored with packaging over product, sizzle over steak. How much do you suppose the city of Hartford spent last year alone on this quest to improve its image?
Nearly a quarter of a million dollars. Now, imagine if that money had been invested into affordable housing or studio space for artists. Imagine how Hartford's image might improve if it actually did something concrete to attract the type of people -- artists and young entrepreneurs -- who naturally, organically improve the standing of neighborhoods the old-fashioned way, through hard-work and creativity.
We need to start focusing our attention on actual improvements over cosmetic ones. Otherwise, I'm afraid for our future. What do you think?
