It's true. I saw some good theater. In LA.
It was a recording of the Thrilling Adventure Hours, a live radio show in the style of the old time radio. I've been listening to their podcasts through iTunes for a few weeks now. They take older genre's and put a nice twist on them. Western on Mars? Check. A Paranormal Nick and Nora Charles? Check? A superhero with laser beams? ...ok, there's no twist there, it's just fun.
I realized the theater they record it at wasn't to far away, so I walked. I know. Theater AND walking, it's almost like I'm back in New York. Except... I walked by trees and it was actually a little warm....
Anyway. The Thrilling Adventure Hour records at the Largo at the Coronet. It's an older theater that mostly does comedy and music now. You pass through a fence, checking in, into an open court yard with Christmas lights inviting you in. There's a small bar and another waiting area off of the theater.
You go into the theater and it's a fixed up Art Deco with about 300 seats. The limits dim and the cheers began.
It was a full house the night I went and it was a BLAST. The first story was Sparks Nevada, Marshall on Mars, he had to deal with his talking horse and some Banditos Mutatoes. I like Sparks Nevada, he's one of my favorite characters. And this story guest starred Colin Hanks--who was quite funny and is looking more and more like his dad.
The next one, which was a surprise, I thought they only did one a night, was Captain Laserbeam. Who is powered by lazers. This story was sponsored by Patriot Cigarettes. Love it. Captain Laserbeam is voiced by John DiMaggio....who has probably voiced every character in cartoons you know. Most famously, Bender from Futurama. It's brilliant.
And it ended with Moonshine Holler, a simple story about a millionaire who gives up his money to live the life of a hobo, while he looks for the hobo princess. As he travels the country, he helps out those in need. This story had three guests: Ed Helms, Joshua Malina, and Linda Cardellini.
It was great fun. See really talented actors performing really tremendous material. Through in live music and it is a great night of fun.
Next month: Nathan Fillion as Jefferson Reid, Ace American....
