To write for Theatre or not to write for Theater THAT is the question
So I wrote this one act play over 10 years ago where I let myself 'at it' no holds barred. Brought it to my writing group. They all loved it and thought it was 'typical Yvonne' but probably would never get produced being so edgy, 'out there', adult only humor, as I thought as well.
8 years later I send it to Looking Glass Theatre in NYC, a small female-based theater company who had produced another one of my off-center one acts (The Waitress) a few years before. They were now looking for 'edgy' pieces for their "Late Night Series". I knew NO BOUNDARIES would be perfect for that show and sent in the script.
I forgot about it and moved on to working on screenplays for contest attention (ha ha) and so forth and possibly doing a 'lounge act' which never materialized. Always looking for the next project I then remembered another long ago dream of doing a 'Yvonne-style' talk/comedy show which did begin to materialize (The Unknown Zone Talk Show), thinking my days as a playwright were over and having complete acceptance of that fact.
Lo and behold Looking Glass contacts me or should I say Eva, director who gets my work, contacts me and thus I have a production this weekend which I'm EXTREMELY proud of as of rehearsal this past Tuesday night. So here it is my one act, NO BOUNDARIES at the Looking Glass Theatre Company on West 57th Street this Thurs. night through Sunday.
So the fact remains, will this inspire me to go back to writing for the theater again or just say thank you and move onto my ongoing new challenge of writing/producing/hosting and editing (collaboratively of course) my public access talk show of which I'm having a blast with?
Who knows, but I'm seriously thinking about it, ideas popping in 'me mind'...
As my friend Nancy use to say and I love when I remember this: You never fucking know. That is what's terrifying and at the same time great about being an artist and in this case it was pretty great.
