It might have been the Benedryl I’m taking (I have a massive poison ivy problem – the weed not the super villain), but I was watching the tube and caught Entertainment Tonight's segment on the 25th anniversary of the original BACK TO THE FUTURE auction to raise funds for Parkinson's. And yes I was so hoping they were going to hype an announcement of a fourth movie in the franchise (although in retrospect I suppose that news would trump the Courtney Cox/David Arquette split and wouldn't have been on 2/3rds the way into the show).
The new collection includes a neat segment featuring Eric Stolz who was originally cast in the Michael J. Fox role of Marty McFly. BTTF was a pivotal moment in Fox’s career, it’s hard to imagine him not in the role – it’s definitely a very BTTF twist, right?
So for a moment there although I was excited by the possibility, ultimately maybe more than a little relieved.
Although I'm not even sure that Fox could endure a fourth outing, maybe we're better off after seeing the fourth installment of the INDIANA JONES franchise. I love the concept of updating an old franchise but not sure if it's ever been done up to par.. tell me Extra Critic-ers, is there an example of a great movie that was followed up by a sequel years later? Tell me below!
In any event, I would love someone to at least try to come up with a story for the 30th anniversary and at least have Fox cameo. Surely there must be some unused footage of the Marty character in 1985 or 1955 that could be weaved into a story of his time traveling son or daughter who hooks up with Doc Brown (or even their time traveling sons Jules and Verne).
If we can resurrect THE MUNSTERS surely we can update BACK TO THE FUTURE. What else is Lea Thompson (who played Marty's mom and relative in the 1885 segments) doing these days anyway?
You can order this now from Amazon.. but one final side note: when ordering from Amazon - and as much as I love brick and mortar stores, I cannot resist the incredible prices that Amazon has - never ever pay for shipping unless you absolutely have to have it overnight (and really, how likely is that?).
Here's why: in five years of being a regular customer I have never paid for shipping and never not gotten it in about three days. Sometimes two. Honestly. Take the ‘free shipping’ option and watch it arrive. Hey, it’s only a few dollars but I don’t know about you, but saving a few dollars is important no matter what year it is!
