Last night we held Brevity Fest II at El Cid. It was a great night of fun, camaraderie, strong drinks and some very strong writing. We got off to a bit of a late start due to some technical issues with the sound but once Irene Soderberg took to the stage to sing her first number, the night flew by.
Amy Friedman read a funny and heartwarming piece about her brush with Jean Luc Godard many years ago when she was in a writing class in NYC. Monica Ashton shared some of her latest music she's been composing for the Civil War era musical Banjoes & Bugles with David Secter. Rich Ferguson did a bang-out rendition of his Bond Girl piece. [YouTube video of it here]. Julie Perkins carved another zany and somehow immediately recognizable character for us in one of her hysterical monologues. Roland Tec read a monologue from a brand new play he's been working on for only a few months. Karen Hart sang a hot little number with serious lesbionic overtones. John Yearley shared one of the most poignant and beautiful monologues from his 9/11-themed play, Leap. And Dennis Danziger read another wildly entertaining excerpt from his novel (now out!), A Short History of a Tall Jew.
Thanks, everyone, for another great night. We've gotta plan one for NYC. So, NY-E.C. authors, start writing. You're next!
