Prospect Theatre has a teaser video on their website for their new musical, The Hidden Sky. In it, we see only screen pans across drawings but we hear some of Peter Foley's arresting score underneath a narration which, given the sci-fi content of the piece, provides us with the background. It's an innovative approach worth examining.
By making the choice to avoid images of living breathing actors and instead show the viewer nothing but illustrations, our attention is drawn to the music. And the music sounds gorgeous. Can't wait to see this show. I think more theatre companies should experiment with this sort of thing, particularly for new musicals. Personally, I'm tired of seeing talking-head videos interviewing the costume designer about his/her vision of a given production. Does that really sell tickets? I doubt it.
Here's the video, in case you're curious.
Cool, no?
