So the rainy afternoon turned snowy and, I don't know about you all, but that just gets me in the mood for a show. And, particularly, something musical and intimate. Maybe it's the cold weather. I don't know... So I fired up the old computer and started searching around town. And, it's 6pm and I can't decide what I'd like to see more. Here's just a small sampling of what's out there tonight in this great city of ours.
The sheer variety just floors me! What should I choose?!!!
I could go catch the musical genius of Michael Holland and Karen Mack in their long-running all-request '70s and '80s Pop Schmorgasbord, GASHOLE at the Duplex Cabaret at 7:30PM. This is a show where two talented musicians pass around a rolodex filled with cards on which combinations of 2, 3 (sometimes more) song titles are scribbled. The audience gets to pick their favorite mashups, which Mack and Holland then perform as their show. It's a hoot! theduplex.com
Or... I could saunter east a few blocks to Joes Pub to catch Aussie Anna Copa Cabana in her Christmas Special. Also inspired by the 1970s, Anna is known for recreating (with a wink and a nod) the unmistakeable madness of 1970s variety shows. Her show starts at 11:30PM so technically speaking, I could comfortably catch both. joespub.com
Or... If a little burlesque is what I crave, I could head uptown (or midtown) to the Laurie Beechman in the basement of the West Bank Cafe on 42nd where LE SCANDAL CABARET starts at 10:30PM. beechmantheatre.com
Or... if '80s electronica is more my thing tonight, Le Poisson Rouge (formerly: The Village Gate, on Bleecker) is offering another BOWIE BALL, featuring some brave and talented performers undaunted by the towering shadow (towering shadow?) that is cast by Mr. Bowie and his music. Those of you wondering where Kevin Aviance had gone to... he'll be among the performers tonight. poissonrouge.com
More crazy shit can be found at The Kitchen, Don't Tell Mama, KGB Bar, Cornelia Street Cafe, Upright Citizens Brigade. The list is just too long. Oh and don't forget the uptown venues like Feinstein's or the Carlyle, if you want something a bit more bubbly.
