I'm usually "just" the entertainment guy and while I work in news, and I'm an avid news junkie and political beast, I always thought I wasn't versed enough to write ABOUT politics.
Then, as a long time AOL member and reading what some of their so-called experts post about the political scene, I figure I'm the second coming of Tim Russert compared to some of these people.
And the people writing posts and reader commentary for the Republican right? The ones so enamored of Sarah Palin? Well, at least the ones who can SPELL Palin. Let me start there with the first gnomic truth...for ALL the people who had the gall to say Barack Obama wasn't qualified, just what makes Sarah qualified after giving ONE speech ... that, oh, for the record was written FOR HER.
She should be vice president cause she reads well off a
TelePrompter? Truth be told, for a former TV sports caster, she didn't
even read off the TelePrompter all that well imho.
So, I'm on the AOL forum sites today when I see a long litany of spewed garbage from the right.
Obama hates white people!Obama is a Muslim!Obama hates America! Michelle hates America! His pastor is racist!!He loves terrorists!!Obama just wants to raise taxes, he is a Socialist!!!
I'll say one thing for the right. They might not be accurate but they DO love their exclamation points.
Perhaps it's because, honestly, they know they don't really have a
point to make. Maybe, they think, the pretty graphics will lull the
reader into thinking they are right? And I don't mean politically
right, I mean correct. You know what they say about the moral majority
and the conservative right: they are neither.
The bad news? AOL doesn't police their forums very well and they allow true garbage and lies to sit.
But the good news? VERY good news, if you ask me: Let's just say
for every inflamed and ignorant post from the right, I'm heartened to
see six, to seven, times as many from the left fighting right back. The
anger from the left, and justly so, after eight years of Swiftboating,
lies, distortions, wars -- miscalculated and bungled -- and elections
possibly stolen (okay, stolen, let's just say it) the left isn't taking
one up the butt this time -- and without lube.
Obama and Biden put the right on notice that they would not be Kerry. Or Dukakis. Or Gore. Not this time.
That said, I was emboldened to post my own pro Obama rant on AOL,
but so many of my fellow lefties were bombarding the boards (way to go
lefties) there was like an hour wait, just to wait.
So, here, indulge, the entertainment guy gets a few things off his chest.
This is an open letter to the mostly right forum posters who are
hell bent on smearing and lying about Barack Obama. It's not that he
needs me to set the record straight, but the more people who spread the
truth, well, the lies just won't be as damning or effective.
And before I forget totally,
Visit this site daily. It keeps up with the current attempts of
Karl Rove and his ilk to smear Obama. Something like ten percent of
people in America still think he is a Muslim (not that there is
anything wrong with being a Muslim, but the connotation Bush/McCain and
Co. want the morons to believe is that Obama is somehow a terrorist
connected to 9-11. That more than ten people, let alone ten percent,
believe such idiocy...well, it needs to be fought at every turn.
So, here is what I wanted to say on AOL.
It's an open letter to the Kool Aid drinkers on the right. The ones who, you know, still think George Bush is a good president.
Let me get this right, Kool Aid drinkers...You say Obama hates white people but apparently he does hang out with them when they are terrorists and to make real estate deals and attend his former church, which, if you knew the facts, was about a third white and attended by Oprah for YEARS. And just about every other black celebrity in Chicago. Rev Wright, who served in the military hates America, but your current president was in the National Guard -- for like six minutes -- and barely showed up cause he was busy partying. And Cheney, for the record, never served. ANYWHERE. Good thing. Apparently...a lousy shot.
Obama's a Muslim cause of his father....who he met once in his life? And Obama is an elitist cause he went to Harvard but John McCain doesnt know how many homes and real estate holdings he has? Obama's wife hates America, because of something she said that was taken out of context, but Cindy McCain, an admitted adulterer and drug addict (and admitted FORGER) is a paragon of virtue. Clinton was a disgrace cause he cheated on his wife...who he is still married to. McCain left his wife after she was in a car accident and after a couple of affairs, he traded up to marry a rich woman.
Ah, you Republicans crack me up. You really do. How you twist and distort things.
Did WE Democrats ever make a big deal out of the fact Bush failed at EVERY job he ever had before and after the age of 40, or that he was a drunk, a drug addict or that Laura had killed a man with her car?! No...we just hated Bush cause he was a horrible politician and couldn't talk. And we KNEW he would make America alternately hated, or the laughing stocks of the world. And we knew he would drive business into the toilet.
At least you Kool Aid drinkers have to concede Obama is smart and articulate and bright ... or he wouldnt have gotten to where he is now. Unlike, your president he didnt have daddy's name or money to propel him to sub-mediocrity.
Where DO you Kool Aid drinkers get your news anyway? Fox? The Jerry Springer show? Do you even watch news? Read the paper? Doubtful.
You Republican wing nuts can't have it both ways. You say Obama didnt spend enough time in the Senate, but you DO apparently think he spent time in church 24-7. I thought you liked church goers? Are you mad he was there or wasn't? Make up your minds! Where was he? I think I know...helping poor people! (Sorry, I just had to use an exclamation point myself). All the while McCain was racking up houses....and he still doesnt know how many he owns?
Middle class and poor people should be galled at the idea of having a president who doesnt even know how many homes he owns! (Sorry, this exclamation point this is seriously contagious!!)During his "speech" (and I use the term loosely) McCain did shove down your throats for 48 minutes that he was a POW without mentioning once what he would do for this country now. Other than steal a slogan from the other side that is...oh, and he did pander to women trying to get the Hillary Clinton vote. Unfortunately, Mr. McCain, comparing Sarah Palin to Hillary is like comparing chicken dung to chicken salad.
You can slather mayo all over the former Mayor of Moosefart, or whatever that little podunk was called, and you can even add onions and celery....and she is still going to be chicken poopie.
We all know why the McCain camp is claiming "the media" is after poor Sarah...and by the way...didn't blaming the media go out of style in like 1988?
Still, I don't blame you wing nuts cause when she starts opening her mouth, the American public (well, the rational, thinking, intelligent, 3/4ths of the American public) will be appalled by what falls out...not to mention some of the things HER pastor has been saying!!! (Okay, now I'm just having too much fun.)
Sarah says no to Evolution, no to sex ed, no to gun control, no to gay marriage, no to gays, her church thinks Jews are going to hell cause they dont believe in Jesus, her church thinks gays are convertible (the only convertible I come close to is a Miata, but I digress.) She is also for book burning, firing librarians, she likely abused power with Troopergate, flip flops on earmarks to her state, a state where there are more ice flows and caribou than people, AND this fiscal conservative left her city, the one of 8000 people and as many bison, $20 million in debt. That's talent.Need I even mention she is pushing for "abstinence" to be taught in schools? Sarah, hey, ever hear of home schooling?! Okay, that was just mean. But you know what, after eight years of being crapped on, it feels good to fling some of the crap back. It just does.
Lets hope, Heaven forbid the Kool Aid drinkers really do rally and beat us again...let's at LEAST hope Sarah won't be THAT fiscally "conservative" with the federal government. We're already in the crapper cause of Bush.Get real. Palin is a joke. And she is only on the ticket because this so called "maverick" was scared of a bunch of evangelicals. Seems to me like McCain left those balls in the POW camp. Sad, years ago, before he was running for a job he seems willing to do anything to get, McCain seemed like one of the more rational Republicans on the scene.
Palin? Rational and Palin don't belong in the same sentence. Or country. She's even against a woman having an abortion if she is a carrying a child conceived from rape or incest. No pun intended, that is inconceivable to me. You HAVE to be kidding me. You have to be a couple of tea spoons short of sugar in your unsweetened Kool Aid to be THAT extreme.
Palin is a joke. She would find it tough going to be interviewed by a high school newspaper. Hopefully Charlie Gibson won't let her off too easily. Personally, if she or McCain had any balls, they would do an interview with Keith Olbermann. I think he could make them both cry.
Jokes aside, I was scared enough of Bush being president. Palin? Well, let's just say I'm worried more about my heart than John McCain's...and I'm mighty worried about his.Karl Rove(r) you, attack dog, you...keep the Obama smears coming. I'm waiting for what you might possibly have left...hmmm...Obama is a Nazi crossdresser who likes to make love to vegetables! That's about all you have left. Feel free to use it. It's about as ridiculous as the other charges. And, Karl, good luck keeping Sarah on point. Oh, and here is some unsolicited advice: before she appears on TV you better make a big old batch of Kool Aid for your supporters.
They're going to need it.I used to love Kool Aid. But I think this time, I'll pass.
